Statesman Welsh Springer Spaniels began in the mid 1970's when Susan and
Gary Riese acquired their first Welsh Springer Spaniel. Since then the breed has
become a passion for the entire family. Statesman is a combined breeding effort
between the Riese and Bassel families in suburban Atlanta, GA (USA). It truly is a family
affair and a labor of love.
Our main goal is producing happy, healthy, sound family companions. Statesman is known for being one of the most open kennels for sharing health information, and we are proud of this reputation. For us, health and temperament are the main priorities in any good breeding program. We share ALL known health information on Statesman dogs and puppies and feel that openly sharing health information (including on the ofa.org website) is the best way to reduce the occurrence of health problems in our breed. We are a AKC Breeders of Merit, members of the Welsh Springer Spaniel Club of America, plus both Meghen Riese Bassel and Susan Riese are AKC conformation judges.
Statesman breeds approximately 1-2 litters each year. Much thought is put into each breeding. Susan and Gary are retired, so they can devote their time to the dogs. We have done extensive importing and exporting to/from England, Wales, Sweden, Finland, and Norway to help expand the gene pool and bring in desired traits. We have bred over one hundred show champions including Westminster Kennel Club winners, national specialty winners, Crufts winners, and all-breed best in show winners. We are also one of the few breeders who continue to work our dogs in the field, both for pleasure hunting or at AKC hunting tests. Several Statesman-bred Welsh have been very successful in performance events including obedience, rally, barn hunt, trick dog and more. Although we are very proud of these accomplishments, we are MOST pleased that Statesman puppies make wonderful family companions.
LITTER PLANS: We do not feel comfortable planning a litter of puppies
at this time. Too many factors out of our control. Welsh need lots of socialization to different people and places, veterinary care may be limited, potential owners may not be able to travel to pick up their puppy.
If plans change, we will post here.
Only questionnaires that we have sent to inquiries are acceptable.
For information about upcoming litters, please email Susan Riese at firstname.lastname@example.org
